How to Land Your First Internship in Calgary's Energy Sector
Calgary''s energy sector runs one of the largest student-hiring pipelines in Canada. Majors, mid-caps and service companies all take summer and co-op students, and you do not need prior oil-and-gas experience to break in.
Know the three lanes
- Technical — engineering, geoscience, environmental and data roles.
- Field and operations — seasonal student roles that get you on site.
- Corporate — finance, HR, supply chain and communications.
Apply on the employer''s calendar, not yours
Most summer programs post between September and January. New grads miss roles simply by applying in March. Set reminders and apply the week postings open.
Make a no-experience resume work
Lead with projects, labs, volunteer work and any part-time job that shows reliability. Quantify everything: hours, dollars, people, results.
Pass the safety-culture test
Energy employers screen hard for safety mindset. Mention any WHMIS, first aid or H2S Alive training, and speak about following procedures carefully.
Network the Calgary way
Coffee chats are normal here. Message a recent student hire on LinkedIn, ask three specific questions, and you will learn more than any job board can tell you.
